“The Unbreakable Virgin Islanders” to debut at the University of Delaware

Has America Forgotten the Virgin Islands?”

That was The New York Times’ headline on a column written by UD alumni Peter Bailey, a month after the U.S. territory was struck by not one, but two hurricanes. The rest of America was learning about the devastation in Puerto Rico, but it knew almost nothing about the suffering in the islands where Bailey grew up.

As little as the media talked about Puerto Rico, they talked even less about the Virgin Islands. And one analysis reported by the Washington Post found that coverage of Puerto Rico didn’t ramp up until Hurricane Maria’s aftermath had become a political story.

Bailey has turned his NYT column into a documentary, “The Unbreakable Virgin Islanders.” The movie received its mainland debut in October at the University of Southern California, hosted by the Council for Diversity and Inclusion at USC’s School of Cinema Arts.
