As Peter Bailey’s film “Paradise Discovered: The Unbreakable Virgin Islanders” garners critical-acclaim nationwide having recently screened at Brown University and Charleston Carifest, the award-winning author and filmmaker shared a very personal interview on NPR’s Morning Edition show in Atlanta.
Bailey discussed with host Leah Fleming the frustration felt by Virgin Islanders who have continually been ignored by national media after having been the only community in modern history to survive back to back hurricanes in less than two weeks when both hurricanes Irma and Maria tore through the sole majority-black US territory in September 2017. He also detailed the islands’ healthcare issues as officials try to rebuild the local hospitals and deal with the shortage of healthcare professionals since many relocated after the storms. Unbreakable is based on Bailey’s New York Times’ Op Ed “Has America Forgotten the Virgin Islands” which he penned while building a make-shift roof.
Bailey recently screened “The Unbreakable Virgin Islanders” in Atlanta at the Stonecrest Library. The screening was the featured event of Caribbean American Heritage Month hosted by the city of Stonecrest.
