Media entrepreneur Peter Bailey does not look too white business leaders such as Microsoft founder Bill Gates’ model of success when he thinks of entrepreneurs.

“They don’t know what I face. They don’t know what it is like to go into a bank with the possibility to be turned down because you are Black,” said Bailey, who is an award-winning author and journalist. “I don’t care about Apple filling a diversity quota. I do care about how many Black CEOs are owning and starting Fortune 500 companies.”

So Bailey is starting a new conversation, one that involves highlighting the successes and challenges of Black entrepreneurs through “NiteCap Next,” during a live discussion.

The show hopes to help attract the attention of investors, innovation networks and the community at large. The conversation between Bailey and businesspeople begins in Miami on Nov. 19 at Overtown’s Historic Lyric Theater.

The initiative is the next iteration of “NiteCap Live,” a documentary conversation series held in front of live audiences, who interact with the show.

On “Nitecap Next,” Miami’s most promising entrepreneurs of color will be featured alongside industry leaders in entertainment, business, and technology.

“The current generation of Black entrepreneurs is fighting for economic ownership as opposed to inclusion like our predecessors,” said Bailey.

‘“NightCap [Next]’ will create an authentic bridge for Black entrepreneurs to connect and build businesses together.”

NiteCap’s three-event series in Miami will marry candid stories about opportunities and challenges in local startup scenes with provocative experiences, integrating live theatrical and musical performances.

The Nov. 19 event will feature Brian Brackeen, founder of Kairos, a Miami-based facial recognition software company that was nominated as one of the Wall Street Journal’s 2013 startups of the year.

“NiteCap Next” has garnered support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of its efforts to foster talent and expand economic opportunity. Over the past two years, Knight has made more than 200 investments in entrepreneurship in South Florida.

“Miami’s Black community is making key contributions to our city’s innovation ecosystem and we need more outlets to showcase their work,” said Matt Haggman, Miami program director for Knight Foundation, in a statement. “NiteCap will help fill this gap by highlighting diverse idea makers in a unique format that will spark connections and inspire new thinking.”

Bailey said indeed millennials have a new way of thinking; they want to own a piece of the story.

“The show will take you into the psychology of what it is to be an entrepreneur. If you don’t know the personal issues you are going to face then it is best not even to start climbing the mountain,” Bailey said.

Bailey said it is time that Blacks have new ideas of what it means to be successful.

“I want to bring alternative images of power,” he said. “You don’t have to be a basketball player or a rapper to be successful. Bailey points to people such as developer Don Peebles or private equity giant Robert F. Smith as examples of Blacks impacting the business world.”

Even Bailey himself had to change focus. The original NiteCap was centered on the entertainment industry.

Launched in 2010, NiteCap has hosted some of music and entertainment’s biggest names including Mike Tyson, Fantasia, 50 Cent, Ice T, Janelle Monae, Chad Johnson and Mike Epps. The show is routinely featured on Vibe, BET, MTV and Huffington Post to name a few. The entertainment genre was a natural progression for Bailey. After leaving the Miami Herald, he wrote a book on the life of hip-hop star Trick Daddy, which drew praise from the New York Times.

The print version of NiteCap, which explored politics, people, and issues affecting the Black community, appeared in The Miami Times.
