When nature and the rest of the world left them in darkness the people of the US Virgin Islands gave each other light after being devastated by both hurricanes Irma and Maria, marking the first time in modern history that two category 5 storms struck the same place in less than two weeks. In this second installment of Peter Bailey’s “Paradise Discovered” series viewers encounter a resilient community, America’s sole black majority territory, who saved each other after being ignored by the federal government and mainstream media. Most recently, the film took home top honors for “best documentary feature” at this year’s Toronto Caribbean Tales International Film Festival. Unbreakable as also been added to several classes at the University of Delaware.

This award-winning series based on Bailey’s now infamous New York Times Op Ed “Has America Forgotten the Virgin Islands” has been featured on NPR, NBC, and Daily Kos in light of the filmmaker’s ongoing college tour which has included lectures and screenings at Brown, USC, USF, FIU, the College of Charleston and University of Delaware.

“We already know that far too many mainlanders were not even aware that Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands are part of the U.S. I guarantee they know even less about the rest of the Caribbean. Another introduction to the Caribbean is film. I can think of no better place to start than Peter Bailey’s latest work.” – Denise Oliver Velez, Daily Kos

”The Unbreakable Virgin Islanders is a true masterpiece.” – Paul Brock, co-founder of the National Association of Black Journalists

Description

On September 6, 2017, hurricane Irma struck the island of St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands. The category 5 storm was the strongest ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean. Less than two weeks later hurricane Maria, another category 5 storm, struck the already destroyed island paradise. The tragedy marked the first time in modern history that two category 5 hurricanes hit the same place in less than two weeks. Based on his New York Times Op Ed ‘Has America’s Forgotten the Virgin Islands’, which he wrote while building a make-shift roof and living without electricity for 90 days, award-winning journalist Peter Bailey brings to life what has been called the worst natural disaster in American history. (This film is for academic purchase only and comes with public performance viewing rights.)
